History of The Blast
Alexa Sankary, to honor the memory of her young friend, Michael Mancuso, created The Blast in 2008. What started as a grassroots walk has blossomed into a wonderful community event raising funds and awareness for neuroblastoma at Cook Children's. The courage of these children and their families inspire Alexa every day to keep her dream of finding a cure for Neuroblastoma alive.
Through the community’s generous gifts and participation over the years, this event has raised a staggering total of over $1,200,000! Thanks to the generosity of the community and everyone who has played a part in making this event so successful, Cook Children's neuroblastoma program is changing lives through clinical research and critical care.
You make a difference!
100% of the proceeds of The Blast go directly to Cook Children’s to benefit the neuroblastoma program.
Through the collaboration with New Approaches to Neuroblastoma Therapy (NANT), Cook Children’s is is able to enroll patients in new clinical trials offering the leading edge of care for neuroblastoma. The money raised through this incredible event has already helped change research protocol for kids battling this dreadful disease.
Over the past 10 years, treatment has become less toxic to the bodies of patients creating fewer side effects and has become more efficient in fighting neuroblastoma with targeted therapies. The most up to date treatment options are offered at Cook Children’s so that families who are diagnosed can stay close to home instead of transplanting their family for weeks or months at a time. These are huge strides that were only made possible through research and could not have happened without funding from The Blast.
Check out the video above to see one of the many treatment options available at Cook Children's for patients battling neuroblastoma.
